RIO – Brazil - Ambassador's first official visit to Minas Gerais ... A state running on gold and iron!

Our Ambassador to Brazil, Paul Hunt, officially visited Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, May 6 to 8, 2008. Minas Gerais, a priority region for Canada, has strong connections with Canada due to its important mining sector and the strong presence of over 40 Canadian companies. The Ambassador was received by the State Governor, Aécio Neves (a front runner to Brazil's 2010 Presidency), at the Palácio da Liberdade. He also visited the Legislative Assembly and met State Deputies and senior decision makers from local business associations.

The Ambassador and RIO's Consul General, Jean-Yves Dionne, hosted a cocktail reception for over 100 key contacts from the Canadian community, local authorities, business, NGOs, and academics. RIO maintains an Honorary Consul, Dr. Ricardo Guimarães, and a dynamic Trade Office (BELO) in Belo Horizonte.
